Grabbing a quick, fresh lunch in Midtown can be a difficult affair. Pop out of the office, and we’re either relegated to street meats, fast food or the same ol’ salads and sandwiches. Piada is here to change the game. Three guys from Italy are making it their express mission to bring elevated Italian street food direct to our hands (and taste buds).

The restaurant’s name comes from their signature eat, the piada, a popular flatbread sandwich hailing from the Adriatic Coast. But don’t call it a panini: the piada is delicious in its own right, and more closely resembles a pita than its Italian counterpart. Plus a taste of the the classic preparation isn’t so far away – Piada has committed to importing many of their ingredients directly from Italy. From a hot cup of Aneri coffee to expertly cured prosciutto di parma, they’re bringing it all to Midtown, along with fresh local vegetables to top it all off. Try one of the traditional piadas, like the Sceicco Bianco with prosciutto cotto, stracchino (a spreadable soft cheese, like brie) and arugula. Or a vegetarian Federico, with grilled eggplant, pepper, zucchini and basil. To have it all, we like to go ahead and build our own. Hint: pile that flatbread high with prosciutto di parma, arugula, caramelized onions and pecorino. Settle in for some prime people-watching by the window, where folks make their way out of the E,M and 6 trains out front. Even a short respite from the working world feels good when we’re scarfing down our favorite lunch of the week.
