Piccolo Fiore

A visit to Fabio Piccolo Fiore is a step into the Renaissance. Was it Michelangelo who said high-quality dessert, wine and Italian fare was the key to man's search for knowledge? Well, we're saying it now.
A visit to Piccolo Fiore is a step into the Renaissance. The rich colors brought to fame by Raffaello, Bronzino, Guardi and Da Vinci span from floor to ceiling in the dining area, lending an elegant and warm air. Looking for a locale for a peaceful glass of wine with friends? Piccolo Fiore offers that and then some – pair the vino with wooden boards draped in Antipasto Rustico, artisanal salumi, cheeses, bruschetta, olives and fresh vegetables for a welcoming cornucopia to a meal. Their pastas are equally enlightening, from Absolut Penne to Linguine di Mare and house-made gnocchi. We’d say Da Vinci himself would’ve devoured a plate of the savory linguine with calamari, shrimp, clams, mussels and spicy marinara. (All that brainpower can really build an appetite.) And we picture Raphael blissfully taking a break from painting over a bowl of gnocchi with fresh mozzarella, pesto genovese and toasted pinoli.

But for the particularly starved scholar, we’d recommend additional therapy in the form of the Costoletta or the Salmone. Each omega-rich morsel is simmered in a light, tangy blend of lemon, shallots and white wine. And the Costoletta is an expertly broiled 16-ounce veal porterhouse served with sautéed mushrooms. (Yep, a whole pound.) After doing our darnedest to polish it all off, we begin to feel either a food coma or our own Renaissance coming on. Either way, we’d say the Dark Ages (aka work days) end after finishing the meal with a sweet helping of the Amanti del Dolci. Was it Michelangelo who said dessert was the key to man’s search for knowledge? Well, we’re sayin’ it now.
