New York celebrates Beer Week once a year, but there’s a place that’s doin’ it year round. Over in Long Island City, Alewife is giving pints a proper home inside a cavernous two-story bar, where the taps flow and the menu kicks standard bar food to the curb. From 28 rotating drafts to a selection of 100 bottles and a secret stash of rare beers, there’s a brew for everyone. Cask enthusiasts and casual ale chuggers can all gather round the communal table downstairs or kick back on the couches upstairs. Spend time browsing the long list of suds or engage in some friendly discussion about the merits of stouts vs. porters.

No matter the debate, we’re pretty sure most folks in either spot can agree on an Alewife Burger. The signature eat arrives sandwiched alongside fresh mizuna, roasted tomato, dill relish, grilled onions, Irish cheddar and garlic spread. For lighter fare (or to leave more room for booze in our bellies — sorry, Mom) we go for the seasonal Winter Greens. It’s a unique mix of pomegranates, pine nuts, fennel tops, shaved root vegetables and parmesan drizzled in a truffle vinaigrette, making for a salad that’s far richer than most. Our preferred grazing over a pint? Ginger Coffee Beef Jerky and an order of Sigmund’s Pretzels. The East Village bakery has expanded across the city and they certainly know how to twist some dough, which is made all the better with a decent pint. One of the best parts about this beer lovers’ haven is that returning barflies can become a member of the joint’s Mug Club. Guests who drink 40 different styles of beer in 30 days get a 16-ounce mug with their name on it (and a glorious sense of life accomplishment, naturally.) So get to it, and don’t forget to ask about the Secret Stash. Some of the best and rarest brews are kept off the main menu, from one-off releases to hard-to-get specialties.
