Lucky for us, a trip to the East Village is just a tad bit cheaper than flying to Rome. Look for us in a post-work haze through the windows of neighborhood newcomer Figaro Villaggio.
After a languorous Monday or a head-spinning Wednesday, there’d be few things better than hopping aboard the next flight to a breezy Italian villa on the Mediterranean coast. But while we await our winnings from the New York Lotto, we’re bound to get a little hungry. Lucky for us, a trip to the East Village is just a tad bit cheaper than flying to Rome in the meantime. Look for us in a post-work haze through the windows of neighborhood newcomer Figaro Villaggio. The walls glimmer with fresh white paint, the bar glows a calming blueish purple and the friendly service beckons the weary to sip some vino while watching the world make it’s way up 1st Avenue through the surrounding floor-ceiling windows.

Dishes are served family style, ideal for passing around amongst famished friends. The Salmon Nicoise Salad makes for a wholesome (and incredibly filling) solo dinner or a shareable start to a laid back night. The Prosciutto & Melon also kicks off a convivial vibe but there’s nothing mellow about surrounding a plate of prosciutto with fellow desirous humans. (We’d recommend tactics of diversion in order to swipe the last slice of salty-sweet-juicy goodness.) We’re partial to seafood favorites like the Calamari Frito and the Frutti di Mare con Linguine. The crispy fried squid paves the way for the Frutti di Mare’s marine treasure trove of shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels and, yes – more calamari in a rich garlic tomato sauce. Or for folks looking for more turf with their surf, we’d also go for the Sirloin Steak & Shrimp, a happy pairing for the carnivores at the table. No matter the eats, it’ll feel good to swap the Village for the Villaggio at least for an hour or two.
