Mexican food was never intended to be the gloopy yellow cheese often relegated to ballpark nachos. (Not that we haven’t shameless sucked some down in, say, the 7th inning or so.) Indeed it can be fresh, healthy and incredibly flavorful. In this spirit, Al Horno is taking things far beyond what a plate of yellow cheese could ever do to harness the palate. Drawing on traditional Mexican flavors, this Hell's Kitchen joint is crafting some of the city's favorite health foods into meals that are as tasty as they are guilt-free. Tucked on 47th Street, just off of bustling 9th Ave. this is where copious quinoa and kale meet tender barbacoa, fresh cactus and homemade sauces, forming delicious bonds we like to eat.

Burritos are the power players on the menu here, alongside tacos, tortas, quesadillas, soups, salads and full plates for lunch and dinner. Plus, breakfasts and desserts offer a savory start or sweet end to the day. We’d enjoy waking up to Egg Whites Rancheros and Chia Seed Pancakes, then saying goodnight over Baked Wheat Churros and Rice Pudding with Cinnamon and Dates. Our favorites from the burrito lineup have us caught in a love triangle between the Turkey Chorizo and the Lean Beef Barbacoa. The latter is slow-cooked and makes for juicy burrito goodness, and the crumbly Turkey Chorizo sausage is made in-house with a fresh blend of spices. Over in Camp Veggie, the Cauliflower and the Kale burritos are the standouts, flavorful enough to satisfy full-time vegetarians and their omnivore friends. For the savvy eater, any one of these bad boys could certainly make for two meals, ideal for lunch and a 4 p.m. power-up at the office fridge. But then again, we'll probably eat our second half of burrito soon—nope, now.
