Free happens to be our favorite price, and it's also one of our favorite things about this otherwise wildly expensive city: there's so much to do that doesn't cost a dime. We're always looking for new ways to see New York without opening our wallets, so last week we asked:
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN NY FOR FREE?
OUR SCOUT SAYS:
In the summer, I'm partial to the many, somehow completely free outdoor movie series, or kayaking on the Hudson through the free community boathouses. Now that autumn's arriving, I have to say the Ramble. There's no better way to not spend money in the fall then to wander the world's most perfect stretch of park.
"Freecycle.org and best one dollar you will spend is dollar pizza or $1 Thai food at street markets."
- Truddie Trixy Reif
"I recently have fallen in love with biking around the city - you stumble upon pocket 'hoods you would never see by public transit, plus you get to discover street parties and events which is totally unexpected and fun."
- Alisha Miranda
"Going down to the bottom of the Frying Pan boat, Secret Science Club events, and The Brooklyn Free Store. Also, most of my shows are free every month (Facebook.com/juliabarrymusic). :)"
- Julia Barry
"Open House New York!"
- Debbie Ullman
"Watch street performers in Washington Sq Park"
NEXT WEEK’S WHAT SAY YOU: BEST PLACE TO TAKE OUT OF TOWNERS?
Your parents from Ohio and best friend from Omaha want to get a real taste of New York, and you're the one who gets to show them the city for the first time. What's on your out-of-towner itinerary? Let us know via
