Blackthorn Tavern
The Scoop: Haven’t you always wanted to have a den? A place where you could totally get away and be surrounded by all the things that make you happiest? Take a second to visualize what you’d want it to look like (side note: hopefully you’re reading this in a soothing meditation voice). Does it include more TVs than you can count on both hands, two pool tables, a heated patio, old school arcade games, a photo booth, lively events every night and row after row, tap after tap, cooler after cooler of your favorite drinks? It does? Well, oh boy, we have some great news for you. This fantasy already exists at the Inner Sunset’s Blackthorn Tavern.
Scout Notes: Guess what’s on the menu at Blackthorn Tavern? Drinks. And then more drinks. And while you’re enjoying your more drinks, you can partake in Blackthorn Taverns nightly events. On Sunday (the bar opens at 10 a.m.; talk about hardcore) there’s football, football, football and free BBQ at noon; Monday brings round two of football with trivia at 9 after the post game report; Tuesday is all about bravery and embarrassment with karaoke night; Wednesday is a surprise box rotating between sports contests and live music; Thursday is no cover, live music by Hot Pocket; Fridays DJ Tommy K spins the hottest jams from the 80’s and 90’s; and Saturday it’s Fight Night, when every TV is tuned in to the Big Knockout.
In order to fit in at Blackthorn Tavern... just kidding, the crowd here is so diverse, you’ll have to try to not feel welcome (and what lunatic would do that?). In fact, even those that can’t even see over the bar are welcome. No, I’m not talking about kids. During my visit, there’s a Yellow Lab stretched across the floor, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the bar as his owner sips on a beer and talks sports with his buddies. Blackthorn Tavern is all about the basics, but if you can’t get over your craving for something a little fancier, ask nicely and ye shall receive. The bartenders here are some of the friendliest in the city.
I’d much rather play out my Ultimate Den fantasies at Blackthorn Tavern than some room in my house; it’s a way better atmosphere than I could ever create, and I don’t have to clean up at the end of the night.
