Blackthorn Tavern
The Scoop: Have you ever had one of those good friends that you love no matter what, but one day he starts tucking in his shirt and wearing nicer shoes, but is still the same awesome guy you’ve known for years, just a little... more aesthetically pleasing? The Inner Sunset’s Blackthorn Tavern is kind of like that. It’s always been comfortable and lovable, but with its new look, you can’t help but glance at it out of the corner of your eye every once in awhile and think Damn you look good! But, underneath it all, it’s still the friendly, unassuming bar where you’ll see the same faces over and over again and where, when you walk in to check it out for the first time, the music won’t come to a screeching stop as all heads swivel toward you. You know what we mean.
Scout Notes: Sometimes I have trouble deciding what I want to do. SF has so many events going on all the time, but it can be a challenge to sift through and find the “good ones.” But at Blackthorn, their event calendar is packed with events that aren’t just “good ones,” they’re “awesome ones.” On Sundays at noon, Smokey Joe fires up the BBQ grill to ensure you have enough strength to cheer our teams on to victory; Mondays are when the brainiacs converge for trivia; on Tuesdays you can belt out your favorite song without shame during karaoke night; Wednesday nights are blues and jazz from Blackthorn regulars the Smokedaddies; Thursday night’s drinking soundtrack is provided by Hot Pocket; Friday is gold old fashioned drinking set to the sounds of 80’s and 90’s dance music; Saturday is a surprise box, and Sunday you do it all over again.
If you can manage to rip yourself from the fun going on up front, you’ll find even more in the back: pool tables, arcade games and a phone booth. And that’s not all! (I sound like the announcer on an infomercial.) Blackthorn has a heated patio, so even if it’s officially summer but the weather hasn’t gotten the memo, you can still enjoy yourself in the great outdoors.
