Meet Local Jewelers, Limon Verde
1

Unique and inspired jewelry, handcrafted in Columbia and brought to you by Puerto Rican-born Kalen Trujillo Redmon. Kalen picks up more of her affordable collection during her travels around the globe. We saw Limon Verde's collection recently at an artist's market and caught up with Kalen for a few creative questions:

SCOUT: How would you best describe your work to someone who’s never seen it before?
Kalen: I design our jewelry and then it's handcrafted in my father’s country of Colombia in a filigree style that's typical to the region. We also occasionally hand-select pieces from our jewelers that represent a celebration of nature, which is what Colombian filigree is known for. All of our pieces are made from at least .950 pure hand-spun silver and are all truly unique – most are available in very limited quantities. We work directly with the artisans and are able to provide our customers something that is found nowhere else and at a very reasonable price.

SCOUT: What made you pursue this passion? Or at what point did you realize “this is what I have to do”?
Kalen: Art has always been a passion of mine, but it's been second to my love of unique jewelry. My father has bought me countless pieces and two years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Colombia for the first time in 16 years and was reintroduced to filigree. I bought every piece I could find and truly fell in love with the style. After some discussion with my husband, and with the help of my family in Colombia, I decided to design my own filigree pieces that showed my personality. We are fortunate enough to work with jewelers who do no other work with anyone in the US and can give us a tremendously high quality product.

SCOUT: Where in Atlanta do you go to get new ideas? Or where do you go to unwind?
Kalen: I often go to relax with a cup of coffee at Octane Coffee in West Midtown or grab a drink at The Nook – but may favorite place to completely release any stress of the day is at Piedmont Park. I think most of my inspiration for my designs and for my company come from my simple, quiet walks around the park. My favorite spot is the Active Oval at Piedmont Park. It's often overlooked, but the Oval is a historical part of the park the dates back to the post-Civil War era and offers a historical perspective and great place for reflection.

SCOUT: Your favorite “curious find” in Atlanta?
Kalen: The best chicken wings I have ever had, believe it or not, come from Blake’s on the Park on 10th Street. I cannot get enough of their Lemon Pepper wings. My husband didn’t believe me, so I brought some home and he was not ashamed to (once again) admit that I was right!

SCOUT: Another local Atlantan that inspires you or your work?
Kalen: I don’t mean to sound too cheesy here, but my husband Kevin Redmon, a fourth generation Atlantan, has inspired me the most to move this company forward. I admire Kevin's determination to take what once was an idea - running our own business - into an actual business that has allowed us not only to bring beautiful jewelry to our customers, but also the opportunity to work together on something of our own. Kevin knows exactly where he wants the business to go. So that kind of sense brings great calmness and reassurance to me, as I rely on him to make all the difficult decisions.

SCOUT: Where do you get your best ideas?
Kalen: Inspiration is from everywhere I go. Different styles of architecture, decorations and other random objects I see will often spark a new design. I’ll never tell which, but I even have a piece that I designed that was inspired from a display of plates in a houseware store in Midtown!
