She started as writer and a fashion stylist. Which are both pretty awesome jobs to begin with. But then Tami went out and combined her love of food with her knowledge for styling and officially claimed the title of "Best Job Ever." Along the way, Tami decided to start a blog, Running With Tweezers, to share her stories on all of the above. And considering some of her readers consider her blog so yummy, they want to eat it (true story, see below), we'd venture to say she's succeeding in the blogosphere as well.
Here are a few of our Scout questions with Tami Hardeman:
SCOUT: How might people know you?
Tami: Some folks know me as The Only Food Stylist They’ll Ever Meet aka The Girl With The Coolest Job Ever. However, most know me from my food blog, Running With Tweezers.
SCOUT: What’s your background. Or, better phrased: how did you earn The Coolest Job Ever?
Tami: I was a fashion stylist and writer for several years. One day, I worked alongside a food stylist on a photo shoot and thought “I can’t believe someone actually gets to DO that job!?” I started assisting and learning the business straight away after that and haven’t looked back. I’ve now been styling food full time for about five years.
SCOUT: Awesome. Where’d you get the idea for your blog? Or when did you start it?
Tami: I was standing at the prep table on a job and looked at the other folks in the kitchen and said “I think I wanna start a food blog.” This was four years ago when there were only a handful of food blogs... and the idea of “blogging” was just getting off the ground. I went online, found a blog hosting service, and the rest is history. I first posted in October 2005.
SCOUT: Favorite part of living in ATL?
Tami: We have a great food and restaurant scene here in Atlanta if you know where to look. The other thing I love about Atlanta is the wealth of talented, creative folks we have here. We might not be as obvious as a city like New York...but there are amazing musicians, photographers, artists, and designers here.
SCOUT: Least favorite part?
Tami: I abhor the traffic in Atlanta. I wish we had a viable public transportation system here. My only other complaint: the lack of authentic ethnic food options intown. I don’t mind the trek to BuHi and beyond but I wish there were better choices in my backyard.
SCOUT: What’s your favorite recipe you to make at home when you need something quick?
Tami: When I need something quick or mindless or easy (or all three), I usually make soup. My mother was a genius at soup recipes and I’ve luckily inherited that gene. You can use whatever you have on hand to make something soul-warming and good for you relatively quickly. Gazpacho is quick and easy to make in the warmer months - throw it all in the Vitamix and whiz it together. These days, my soup dinners double as recipe development for an upcoming cookbook - fingers crossed!
SCOUT: One thing people don’t know about you:
Tami: I consider myself a Bloody Mary connoisseur. I love them so...and I love trying new ones. I have often considered starting another blog solely about Bloody Marys and where to have the best ones all over the country. FYI - great Bloodys in Atlanta: Arizona Pub, Rosebud, Leon’s Full Service. Also, people don’t know that when I was 5, I told everyone I was going to be a Solid Gold Dancer when I grew up. My how things change.
SCOUT: Your favorite “curious find” in Atlanta?
Tami: I really love off-the-beaten-path places & products in Atlanta. Cacao is an amazing space to be in...and even as someone who doesn’t eat a lot of Chocolate, their confections are to die-for. The store next door, Authentique in Inman Park, always has unusual home accessories & great props/dishes for photo shoots. My current culinary find is a company called Sensatiables - there is not a website yet, but there is a Facebook page for her line of products. She makes incredible jams! I bought her Caramelized Sweet Onion Jam and I’m insanely addicted - a smear of that on some baguette with a sliver of prosciutto - it’s positively swoon-worthy.
SCOUT: Excuse me for drooling, but onto the next question: Where do you go in Atlanta to get away from work?
Tami: Shoot days tend to be long and last all through the day - in the winter months, there are days I don’t see daylight. So on days off, I am usually cooking at home & working on something new for the blog. A nice lunch with friends is a big treat for me - trips to Pho Dai Loi for pho or a nosh at Dynamic Dish are places I go in search of decompressing, relaxing comfort meals.
SCOUT: Perfect. So many great plugs for awesome Atlanta places. So finally, how about a plug for your stuff?!
Tami: The most recent comment left by one of my readers: “I want to eat your blog.” I couldn’t have asked for higher praise. You can find me at Running With Tweezers: runningwithtweezers.com
