If Benny Gold’s mom hadn’t told him to try again when he mentioned moving to California to become a skateboarder after high school graduation, his streetwear line might not exist today. He ended up going to art school in Savannah, Georgia because of one of his favorite skate videos, Savannah Slamma. Turns out the the skate scene had moved on (the tapes were from the 80’s), but he soon discovered he could make a career out of graphic design. Although Benny says he’s “a really simple guy” who’s “been dressing the same way since I was probably 10 years old,” he’s managed to create a streetwear brand that has a very loyal following. Benny says he’s gotten used to walking into the store and seeing his name everywhere. When he started the line, he'd actually hide the name in the design, but as the brand caught on, it was a way for fans of small label streetwear designers to instantly connect.
So as someone who’s been successful at taking two of his greatest loves, merging them, and turning them in to a respected operation, I had to ask him:
How do you turn your passion in to a business?
Slow, organic growth. I moved out here after graduating college to pursue skateboarding and art, so just being around what you’re inspired by is a big step. But more importantly, the main focus should the fact that you really love doing it, money aside.
Benny Gold (the store) is open Monday through Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
