It takes about two seconds to feel at home at Acre 121. Coincidentally, that's about the same time it takes to walk from the Metro to this establishment's front door. Yes, Acre 121 is a welcoming place, from the smiling face that will greet you when you come in to the bartenders and waitstaff who will take care of you while you're a guest. This place's vibe is as clear and genuine as they come. What better way to dine on succulent barbecue and other low-country-inspired cuisine, like shrimp & grits, while listening to live bluegrass? Obviously that's a rhetorical question because there is no better way. Well, except maybe at the beginning of the week when they project old black and white movies on the wall. Either way, Acre 121 has nailed it on all fronts. The neighborhood influence is evident from the pictures of old Columbia Heights on the barroom walls, and the family-run descriptor is unmistakable. Christine, the wife of Terry the manager, is the Executive Sous Chef and their son also works there. "We all love it here," said Terry. And so do we.

Obviously, besides the general down-home vibe of the place, we're huge fans of the food and drink. The pulled pork is smoked for 15 hours; the ribs for 12. This place even makes its own pickles, ketchup and barbecue sauce. "It's so good the bottle will be full when you sit down to eat and empty when you leave," said Terry. That is, if you want to leave. There's a good chance you'll want to stay long after dinner's over to enjoy a few brews (mostly of the craft variety) or signature cocktails. "They have a classic Southern vibe," said Terry, who noted the Colonel Joe Rickey, which contains bourbon, lime and soda water, was particularly refreshing. Our verdict: Acre 121's Rickey does DC's official cocktail proud.
