“I’ve been a vegan for about 30 years,” said Kenneth, the eatery’s manager. “And I’ve never felt better.” While Kenneth looks like he gets his fair share of exercise, he attributes his extra energy to an animal-free diet, as well.
Usually when I find myself asking “Where’s the beef?” I’m disappointed. But in the case of Senbeb Café, a little joint attached to a vegan co-op in Manor Park, I was elated. What I ate looked like beef, felt like the texture of beef and, perhaps most importantly, tasted like 100 percent USDA Choice certified bovine. Yet it wasn’t! The “beef” at Senbeb is vegan. In fact, save for the sparse use of honey every now and again, so is everything else. “I’ve been a vegan for about 30 years,” said Kenneth, the eatery’s manager. “And I’ve never felt better.” While Kenneth looks like he gets his fair share of exercise, as well, he attributes his extra energy to an animal-free diet. “I would never go back to eating meat,” he said. And why would he? When he’s got such a good tromp l’oeil version at the ready, along with a whole slew of made-from-scratch vegan sides, including a variety of raw-prepared dishes, who needs meat?
