Walking into a space painted just a shade or two lighter than a Tiffany box, I felt a wave of indulgence wash over me. But that's to be expected, right? Like an over-the-top Tiffany diamond, the rich and tasty cupcakes and custom cakes (just like those shows on TV, you name it and they can make it a cake) offered up inside Occasionally Cake, right on the main drag in Old Town, are exactly that. It's like a scene out of Alice in Wonderland before it got all trippy. The shop is elegant, pastel and spotless, which makes the array of one-of-a-kind cupcakes the center of attention. The cupcakes range from the fruity, like the Pineapple Whip, which consists of white cake and pineapple buttercream frosting, to the fantastically creative, like the Hot Fudge Sundae. Featuring rich chocolate cake dipped in chocolate ganache and topped with vanilla butter cream, hot fudge, sprinkles and a maraschino cherry, this tromp l'oeil was almost too pretty to eat. Emphasis, of course, on the almost. Resistance is futile.
