I didn’t know it walking in, but consider me pleasantly surprised (and stuffed) when I learned a colossal feast awaited me at Layalina. The name of said feast is Layalina's Special Platter, a.k.a. every meat lover's dream, which includes lamb shish kabab, grilled cubes of lemon-herb marinated chicken and grilled Syrian-spiced beef, all cooked fresh and made-to-order. But don’t fret herbivores, Layalina also serves over 20 vegetarian dishes, including falafel, six different kinds of hummus and a dish not to be missed called The Sultan's Feast that’s impressive enough to make even the most vociferous meat eater in the bunch go veggie. But I guess this level of culinary mastery should be expected: established in 1997, Layalina has had plenty of time to perfect their secret family recipes, which come from both Lebanon and Syria, thanks to the transatlantic roots of husband-and-wife team Husni and Rima Kodsi. To complete the family affair, Layalina is named after the couple’s daughter and translates to “our nights,” which I thought quite fitting because I couldn’t think of a place I’d have rather been this warm evening in Arlington.

Pomegranate Hummus, $7.95

Tabouleh Salad, $7.95
