Back Alley Waffles

One of the best parts about DC are its back alleys. Not only do they often provide useful shortcuts, but in the case of Blagden Alley, there's one alley perk I had no idea my life was even missing—art and waffles, together at last!
One of the best parts about DC is its back alleys. Not only do they often provide useful shortcuts, but in the case of Blagden Alley (the alley on 10th St. NW between M and N Streets), there's one alley perk I had no idea my life was even missing—art and waffles, together at last! That's thanks to Back Alley Waffles, which not only provides one of the most deliciously indulgent, yet light and airy buttermilk waffles around (complete with a dollop of fresh-churned butter and real maple syrup), but also a really cool art gallery environment. In fact, it's owners Craig Nelsen's larger-than-life mosaics and Sherman Davis's eye-catching paintings that literally make up the walls. But it was the wall facing the food-prep area that grabbed my olfactory system's attention. That's where I found the small, but well-designed menu that includes those made-to-order waffles I already inhaled talked about, as well as fresh fruit smoothies (made with aloe here to enhance the health benefits) and coffee and chai. Craig and Sherman are currently working on installing an outdoor dining/art-friendly area next to the building, with big plans for a permanent and functional art installation of their own made from old Christmas tree trunks, sculpted rebar, canvas and colorful lights. Check it out between bites.
