Walking into Freddie’s Beach Bar is like walking into a Nicki Minaj music video; quirky beach toys cover every available surface, from plastic flamingos to Hawaiian print T-shirts. There are enough Barbie Dolls to fulfill every little girl’s—or boy's—fantasy, and enough disco balls to rival any scene in Saturday Night Fever. This isn't just a bar, it's a destination. And that's thanks to the bar owner Freddie's own pedigree. He went to Rhode Island School of Design. “I was lucky I didn’t have to hire a designer when opening my restaurant,” he said while laughing. And it's true. Freddie's is one-of-a-kind. You definitely won’t find ruby red slippers and assorted baby chairs on the walls of any other restaurant in DC, or maybe anywhere. Customers playing bingo were also quick to rave about the warm staff. One customer told me, “A varied group of people frequent Freddie’s but everyone's treated like family.” I can vouch for that too. After my first visit I'm already on my way to regular status: before I left I booked a table for Sunday brunch! Other events include: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday karaoke (9 p.m.); Wednesday night drag bingo (8 p.m.) and karaoke (10 p.m.); Saturday night karaoke; and Sunday's Freddie’s Follies Drag Show.
