When I walked into On the Purple Couch my eye went directly to a cropped St. John short-sleeve metallic sweater. Without even trying it on, I said, "I'll take it."When I walked into On the Purple Couch my eye went directly to a cropped St. John short-sleeve metallic sweater. Without even trying it on, I said, "I'll take it." That's when I met shop owner Bahia Akerele, a style maven whose whirlwind upbringing as a child of diplomats had her living all around the world. "I love fashion," she said, which is evident by the way she talks about some of the items in her shop. For instance, those strappy platform never-been-worn YSL stilettos pictured above? "Ooo, they're just bad," she said, as in totally bad ass. In fact, several pairs of shoes in this consignment store qualify as totally bad ass. The beaded Valentino mules? Check. The Ferragamo pumps? Check. And, really, there are just too many more to list than I have room for. Instead, I'll just say, this is a store worth visiting yourself, if not for the clothes and accessories, which range from new-with-tags-on designer items to gently used contemporary goods fit for work or play, come for the menagerie of custom household items, like the cool, colorful sideboard or the painted trunk. This isn't just a consignment store—it's a consignment experience.
