Penn Social

50% off Penn Social
Maybe because of its size, Penn Social has an atmosphere to match DC's many moods, from a few leather couches upstairs that look suitable for intimate scotch-drinking to the almost carnival-like experience downstairs. Don't miss the murals.
Among the fancy restaurants and made-for-tourist haunts that occupy the majority of Penn Quarter sits one behemoth of a bar where those of us who live here can go to relax. I'm talking about Penn Social. Formerly known as Riot Act, this two story, come-as-you-are bar has undergone a total facelift in both decor and attitude. "We're a place where anyone can have fun," said Evan, Penn Social's marketing director and general awesome dude. And he's not exaggerating. Maybe because of its size, Penn Social has an atmosphere to match DC's many moods, from a few leather couches upstairs that look suitable for intimate scotch-drinking to the almost carnival-like experience downstairs, which comes complete with skeeball, cornhole, six projection screens (perfect for football season) and wall murals by local artist Billy Colbert that only a DC resident can love. Transcending it all, though, are the hot dogs. Try the eponymous Penn Social Dog, which comes smothered in baked beans, pulled pork and sauteed chipotle onions. It's bar food that's made for heavy beer drinking and you'll find 30 on draft to choose from, including DC favorites DC Brau and Chocolate City, that are spread among three different bars. And as if all this wasn't enough, check the schedule on Penn Social's website for info on trivia night, District Karaoke nights and more.
