We already know the food is fantastic at J. Paul's (don't miss the Mahi-Mahi tacos), but it's the signature cocktails that keep us there for hours.J. Paul's isn't just unlike any other bar in Georgetown, it's unlike any other bar in DC. Not only did Al Capone once sit at the bar counter, which was salvaged specially from a Chicago stockyard, but the food and drink at this high-ceilinged venue are also one-of-a-kind. I'm pretty sure it's only here where I can indulge in the best of raw bar specialities, order a special-recipe hamburger designed with Nats star Bryce Harper in mind and kick back with some of the most innovative handcrafted cocktails in the city, including an autumnal must-have, a carrot juice Bloody Mary. "It's the un-Bloody Mary," said Bar Manager Sarah Counts. She came up with the vitamin-packed concoction as an alternative to the tomato juice-filled standard. "It's a meal in a glass," she said. For diners who come later in the day, I recommend ordering the Vandage Tardive. French for "Late Harvest," this refreshing cocktail combines house-infused lemon-thyme gin, muddled red grapes and champagne. Pair it with an order of J. Paul's signature Mahi-Mahi tacos or the chef's near-zero-filler, all-meat crabcake and learn the meaning of life is good.
