Guardado's

The only thing missing from this Spanish lunch was the siesta. Another sangria will have to do.
Although I've never been to Spain, thanks to my love of tapas, sangria and all paella, I consider myself somewhat of an expert in this European country's cuisine. Which is why the second I peeped the menu at Guardado's, a cute husband-and-wife owned spot in Bethesda, I fell in love. This cozy restaurant serves up spot-on Spanish tapas, including traditional favorites, as well as a few chef's specials. I started my feast with an order of crispy Croquetas Españolas, a staple in Spain that combines béchamel with chicken and serrano ham, and the Pimientos del Piquillo. Possibly the best thing to hit my tongue since, well, the aforementioned Croquetas, these red peppers came stuffed with goat cheese, mushrooms and spinach. Between sips of sangria and bites of all the above awesomeness, I managed to mumble my order for Paella Valenciana. Enough for about three, this giant dish was served piping hot full of simmering saffron rice, shrimp, mussels, squid, chicken, fish, green peas and the righteousness that is piquillo peppers. The only thing missing from this Spanish lunch was the siesta. Another sangria will have to do.
