Shopping local has gone global at one of the newest additions to Mt. Pleasant Street. At Amani ya Juu, which is Swahili for "Peace from Above," every purchase you make will help an African craftswoman pull herself and her community out of poverty. But knowing your hard-earned cash is going to benefit the Amani organizations in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Liberia, is only half the reward because the huge array of accessories and home decor items in this store are just as awesome. "We definitely don't shy away from color," said Brittany Noetzel, who runs the store. "Of course, we're also conscious of people's work needs." Which means while my eye was initially drawn to the wall of brightly colored iPad cases and bags, it eventually settled on an exquisitely detailed, well-tailored dress in more subtle shades. "That's our most popular dress design," said Brittany's co-worker Breanne Wroughton. But perhaps our favorite items in the store were for kids. The buckets of hand-crafted safari animal plush toys made us smile. We're pretty sure our baby nephew will agree.
