Although August is known to many as DC's slow season due to the Congressional recess, summer vacations and general heat-induced malaise, there's one industry that's standing the heat inside this proverbial kitchen. In fact, they're standing the heat inside their literal kitchens. We're talking about all the great area chefs who are making the righteousness of Restaurant Week happen August 13-19. We salute you. And now, we eat your meals.
Below is a list of what we think are the seven hottest scoops. In other words, for a set price of $20.12 for lunch and $35.12 for dinner, you'll definitely get your money's worth. That is, during any other week, that amount of money might buy you an entree. But next week? You'll get three courses and all the bragging rights, so don't sleep on making reservations:
Acadiana (901 New York Ave., NW)
When to Try: Lunch or Dinner
What to Try: Southern and Creole flavors reign supreme here. Although it doesn't sound exciting, it is: don't miss the trio of Deviled Eggs, each served with a different topping.
BlackSalt Fish Market & Restaurant 94883 MacArthur Blvd., NW)
When to Try: Lunch
What to Try: This 2012 Rammy Award winner is one of the tastiest spots in town thanks to chef Jeff Black. Don't miss the Provençal Seafood Stew, which highlights what this place does best—fresh seafood.
RIS (2275 L St., NW)
When to Try: Lunch or Dinner
What to Try: Chef Ris Lacoste is channeling Julia Child, featuring her recipes at both lunch and dinner. Don't miss the French Crudité Plate, which features leeks vinaigrette, celeriac remoulade, sherried beets and French potato salad.
Birch & Barley (1337 14th St., NW)
When to Try: Dinner
What to Try: If given the choice, sit inside. The sidewalk patio can get cramped. And insanely hot. But as far as the food goes, everything's a standout because it changes so often to match the freshest ingredients available.
Sushi Taro (1503 17th St., NW)
When to Try: Lunch or Dinner
What to Try: This is probably the best deal, as Sushi Taro runs well about $50 per person on average, at least at dinner. Don't miss anything. Take advantage of the more rare sushi, like fatty tuna and sea urchin if you're looking for something truly memorable.
