Sonic Circuits Benefit for Pyramid Atlantic

Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center, 8230 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Md.

Sonic Circuits, the much-lauded experimental music festival, occasionally throws smaller—but equally weird and equally noisy—shows throughout the year. This one benefits Pyramid Atlantic, the printmaking, screen-printing and book-arts center that offers classes and studios (in addition to being Sonic Circuits' home base). Amptext, which presents a bricolage of electric bass, radio, cello, amplified objects and field recordings, and the improvisational Soft Pieces are two of the five groups on the bill. Admission is $10 at the door.

Burning Bush

National Gallery of Art East Building Large Auditorium, TK

After a lecture from Agnieszka Holland on her work – which adapts historic central European events for film – the National Gallery of Art will screen her new three-part miniseries for HBO Europe. The shot is an interpretation of Czech student Jan Palach's 1969 self-immolation. A little somber? Sure. After all, Palach's death led to a plebeian resistance effort that's a milestone in the Czech Republic's modern history— but Holland's cinematic work has been lauded for its ability to highlight the joyous, human moments amongst tragedy.
